Math Homework : Word Problem! Please Help!!?
The unit of math I am currently working on is linear systems.. Also known as solving for x and y is systems..
This is the question..
Shannon needs 20 g of 80% alloy gold to make a pendant. She has some 85% gold and some 70% gold from broken jewellery and wants to know how much of each alloy to use. Determine how much of each alloy is needed.
This is the answer : approx. 13.33 g of 85%
approx. 6.67 g of 70%
Please show all your steps and how you did it! Thanks 
let x = amount of 85% gold alloy
let y = amount of 70% gold alloy
x + y = 20
0.85x + 0.70y = 0.80(20) = 16.0
If x+y = 20, then y = 20-x. We can substitute this for y in the 2nd equation and solve for x:
0.85x + 0.70(20-x) = 16
0.85x + 14 – 0.70x = 16
0.15x = 2
x = 2/0.15
x = 13.33 g
y = 20 – 13.33 = 6.67 g
So 13.33g of 80% and 6.67g of 70%
