Is there such thing as a proper Latin accent?

Well I was hearing some songs sung in Latin and noticed the pronunciation wasn’t very Latin-like. For example, Sarah Brightman songs (and others as well) sound like they have a heavy English accent when reciting Latin phrases. Like the T’s sound to English/Germanic and not strong emphasized like their Italian and Spanish language successors. I don’t know how Latin was originally pronounced, but I do know that it sounds a little too “light” compared to the modern romance languages. I was also hearing the song “Lilium” and the way the girl pronounced “o quam sancta” sounded like “o qwahm sawnctaw.” If any of you know a YouTube video of anyone speaking Latin, could you refer me to it because I’m curious on how it’s currently pronounced.

Nobody really knows how Latin was pronounced. For purposes of singing church liturgy, the convention is to pronounce it in much the same way as Italian. In school, on the other hand, pupils learn to pronounce it in the way scholars feel is closest to the way in which the Romans actually spoke, as far as one can deduce this from ancient writings. But there is yet another convention — that of lawyers. English lawyers are not allowed to use Latin phrases in court any more (thanks to Lord Justice Woolf), but traditionally they would make them sound like a terrible travesty of the “correct pronounciation”. When something was adjourned “sine die”, which most people would pronounce “sinay deeay”, lawyers would say “synee die”.
