The Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race – Centuries old contest steeped in tradition and history light up the Thames

London plays hosts to numerous events and occasion. A noteworthy sight not to be missed in experiencing is known as the Boat Race. Creating a festive atmosphere along the River Thames, this annual event is a rowing race between two of the premier universities in the country. Held towards the end of March or early April this competitive contest is also known as the Xchanging Boat Race or the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.

Competitors are clad in hues of blue for this competition which has been taking place since the early 1800s. Initiated after student from Cambridge challenged a friend from rival Oxford to a race on the Henley-on-Thames River. Thus giving birth to a traditional yearly race where the losing team challengers the winner to another re-match.

Spanning over four miles, the route is known as the Championship Course taking and ‘S’ shape beginning at the Putney Bridge in west London and ending at the Chiswick Bridge. An antique coin dating back to the 1800s is tossed in order to decide which team can select the ideal side of the river to row from. Tradition also demands that only present students participate in the race. Having grown in both popularity and stature, The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race draws over 200,000 spectators who crowd the banks of the River Thames. Millions are said to witness live coverage of the event on television.

Creating a celebratory ambiance surrounding the race are allied events in nearby parks. Food and drink stalls together with giant screens for race viewers make it a perfect family outing. Other activities such as rides for children, sports events and even face painting are organized. Charity Walks, Street parties and musical festivals are also organized and held in a festive environment.
